This is the central hub of the maps on the site.
The canals are grouped by region for ease of site navigation. This map shows the regional groupings of the canals covered.
Click the text links below the map to reach the interactive regional map you require where all individual canals are shown in detail.
The main (interactive) maps on each regional page are zoomable and show the lost canals as follows:
Those that are clear on the ‘1900’ map are shown in red as polygons, or as single dashed red lines if they are only traceable by existing features or LIDAR (see the Explanatory Notes page).
The blue lines represent open waterways managed by the Canal & River Trust or others such as private companies (eg the Bridgewater canal).
The green lines on this index represent navigable rivers managed by the Environment Agency or third parties.
Additional features can be accessed by the blue ‘burger menu’ at the top right of each regional map.
Note that on the individual region maps open canals and navigable rivers are all shown as blue lines.
