Eastern England Canals

The low lying lands of Eastern England are criss-crossed by rivers and drains. The canals here provided links to those old waterways to improve local connections and provide access to the key shipping routes of the North Sea. The Stamford Canal (1670) has a claim to be the oldest post-Roman canal in the country, although not an industrial canal.
